November 13th : Julian McAlpine – Hydrophonics – ‘Hydro-Herb’.

Julian studied Applied Marine Biology at Heriot Watt  (Edinburgh) and it was here he first came across aquaponics a form of hydroponics that uses fishes to provide the nutrients to grow plants, it was here his interest in hydroponics began.  After his masters in water treatment during which he studied the use of plants for removal of heavy metal pollutants from city roads run off, he worked as a teacher for several years before spending a year in the south of Uganda, operating an aquaculture facility growing trout. While there he developed a successful hydroponic set up in the local village, utilising a ram pump to provide the lift of water without needing electricity. After that he studied at the Open University, and his first year ended with a project during which the Hydro-herb was born.  For the past two years he has been fortunate enough to make a living doing something he really loves, bringing simple hydroponics into people’s kitchens.
